Dear Parents

It has been a delight to see the children embrace a wonderful, crisp autumnal week in school and all children, from the youngest to the oldest, have enjoyed playing with and amongst the fallen leaves.

It was my pleasure this afternoon to accompany Archie, Othelia, Mason and Cianan to join and help our youngest Foals group for their musical hour with Mrs Warburton.  Great fun was had by all, singing, dancing and making music with African drums and a wide array of percussion instruments.  This group has proven to be very popular and, if you have any friends with babies or little ones, then please do invite them along on Friday afternoons from 2.30pm during term time.

We carried on our theme of ‘Celebrations’ this week, as we all celebrated Fairstead Fred’s birthday today! We have been busy all week, making him cards, designing invitations and planning party games, in preparation for this special event!
In English, we spent time discussing with our talk partners what we thought he might like for a present. We then wrote our ideas and drew some fantastic illustrations. In Maths, we made him special shape pictures and began naming and talking about the properties of the shapes.
We finished the week by singing to Fred and sharing his yummy chocolate birthday cake.  Happy birthday, Fairstead Fred!
A polite reminder, please could all parents’ views for the Michaelmas Term be returned to Mrs Sanders as soon as possible.  Many thanks.

Year 1

This week in Mathematics, Year 1 have been focusing on length.  They have been exploring the length of different items using both non-standard and standard units.
Our work on The Great Fire of London has been progressing well and we have written newspaper articles about the event.  We have also been extending our knowledge of chronology by creating timelines on the events leading up to and during the Fire of London.

Year 2

In Art this week, Year 2 have continued their exploration of the colours, shapes and movement of fire.  The children looked at paintings of the Great Fire of London and used soft pastels to create their own fiery scenes.

Year 3 & 4

This week, Years 3 and 4 made another visit to The National Horse Racing Museum as part of this term’s Local History studies. Following on from looking at the establishment of racing in Newmarket, this week the children looked at artefacts from the last 200 years.
The Heroes and Legends of the Turf exhibition introduced the children to key characters from the history of racing. They chose and wrote about one artefact from the period – a jockey’s silks, a horse’s shoe, a trophy or a piece of memorabilia. The last included items that seem quite modern – commemorative mugs, programmes or plates – and a snuff box with a picture of a leading jockey from the 19th Century.
One item all the children studied was a candelabra given to Admiral Henry Rous in thanks for his work with the Jockey Club. It was quite spectacular – silver, taller than most of the children and topped with a statue of the Admiral!
They also enjoyed looking at the silks. The children learned what happens once you buy a racehorse; registration, choosing a name and choosing the colours of the silks your jockey will wear in races. They modelled some of the silks in the museum’s collection.

Years 5 & 6

On Thursday this week, eighteen children from Years 5 and 6 (and Ella from Year 4!) took part in an indoor athletics championship at Newmarket Leisure centre run by Forest Heath District Council. The children were one of fifteen local schools attending the event. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves, taking part in two track and field events each, including: soft javelin, speed bounce, chest push, vertical jump, standing long jump, standing triple jump, obstacles and relays. The scores for boys and girls were combined and our total score positioned us in fourth place. Well done, everyone!

Match Reports

On Wednesday 22nd November, the U9 Girls Netball team played away against Holmwood House.  It was a great day and everyone played really well as a team.  Izzy’s shooting was exceptional in the second quarter, when she scored 8 goals.  Everybody defended really well with lots of intercepting of the opposition’s passes.  We won 8-4.  The Player of the Match was me and the Most Improved Player was Fleur.  Another fantastic game – well done, girls and keep up the good work!”  Ella, Team Captain, Year 4

We had our fifth Informal Tea Time Concert this term in our wonderful Performing Arts Centre on Tuesday 21st November. Our performers played a variety of pieces on piano, violin and guitar (acoustic and electric) to an audience of friends and family. Thanks to our Music Prefects, Katie and Georgina, everyone was served tea, coffee and cakes.

We have two more Informal Concerts this term: Tuesday 28th November and Tuesday 5th December.

Would you like to help the Parents’ Association?

Fairstead House is fortunate to have a very active Parents’ Association with a great team of people running fabulous events for the children, as well as fundraising.   We do, however, need a committee to run it and we currently have a number of  committee positions open including Chair and Secretary.  If you would like to volunteer for a committee position or be a Year Rep then please do get in touch with the School Office.

It is only with parents’ support that we can run successful and enjoyable events such as the Autumn Glow and the forthcoming Christmas Fayre and Film night. Thank you  The Parents’ Association
