As I write, I can hear the happy sounds of the children thoroughly enjoying their disco and end of year party. A huge thank you to the band of parents who have worked to hard this afternoon to produce a spectacular and quite delicious picnic for the children to enjoy after dancing.
A highlight of the week for me was when I joined Years 5 and 6 for a short while yesterday afternoon on the July Course. I was exceptionally proud of the children. They looked terribly smart, were beautifully behaved and listened with interest and attention to the science behind racing. They also learnt to study form!
There was a lot of excitement in Nursery this week as children visited for the first time in preparation for their start in September. They all settled in quickly and enjoyed meeting their new friends.
Reception have been learning about the Summer Solstice and the children were fascinated to discover the mysteries of Stonehenge. The children thought about how Stonehenge was built and then worked together to create fantastic reconstructions of the stone circle.
Year 1 and Year 2
This morning, I was delighted to be able to accompany Years 1 and 2 on their Tesco ‘Farm to Fork’ experience. The focus of the morning was on sustainability, Fair Trade and the Rainforest Alliance. We particularly enjoyed going behind the scenes and (for the children, anyway) going into giant fridges and freezers was a highlight!
Year 3 have returned to Invaders and Settlers to learn about the last time there was a successful invasion of this country. There were four possible successors to Edward the Confessor’s throne and they have considered why each one thought they should be King. The children have put together a timeline of the events leading up to William’s coronation on Christmas Day, 1066.
The children in Year 4 worked in groups to plan and perform a factual television programme. Their programmes explained how sounds travel and the link between the loudness of a sound and the size of the vibrations. The children then presented their programmes to each other. Each group filmed their programmes using the iPads and afterwards watched and evaluated their own performances.
Year 5 and Year 6
It has been another fun and busy week for Years 5 and 6. Firstly, ‘Bikeability’ has been a very important part of this week’s outdoor learning programme. All the children have taken part; learning about the Highway Code and staying safe on the roads when on their bicycle. The children have all successfully achieved a Level 1 or Level 2 qualification – well done!
Furthermore, Years 5 and 6 enjoyed the final part of the ‘Under Starter’s Orders Programme 2016’. This has been an educational programme organised by the National Horseracing Museum, offering the children a super insight into the world of horse racing in Newmarket. The final day was celebrated with a trip to the races. The children enjoyed another outdoor learning opportunity when the anatomy of a race horse was explored using a ‘live’ painted model. This was followed by ring side seats at the Parade Ring where we were able to observe the racehorses up close, as well as catching sight of some very famous jockeys!
This week we also welcomed our friend Ellie back from Italy. Ellie has visited the school every year since Reception for a short period in the summer term. This has proved to be a wonderful learning experience for everyone, in which we have been able to share experiences.
Years 1 and 2 Swimming
Thank you to parents who came to watch this week’s swimming lesson at Newmarket Leisure Centre. We hope that you enjoyed watching the progress your children have made and their great enjoyment in swimming.
Please could we remind parents that whilst it is helpful, it is not essential to pre-book your children into Breakfast Club.
