Dear Parents

Another exciting week has flown past as we race toward the end of term.  I am sure I am not the only one amazed at how quickly this term is passing!  For me, a particular delight this week was watching Year 2 perform their class assembly on Wednesday morning.  The children had written the assembly themselves and clearly enjoyed sharing their learning with us all.

Nursery and Reception

It has been a busy and exciting week for Nursery and Reception children!  They were delighted by a visit from ‘The Animal Experience’ who brought various reptiles such as snakes and a tortoise for the children to look at.

Today, Nursery and Reception children visited Tesco in Newmarket . The children had a look at lots of different foods that are for sale and how Tesco label their ‘Fair Trade’ and ‘Sustainable’ foods. They also saw all the different ways that Tesco try to be ‘environmentally friendly’. Our guide also talked to the children about the importance of healthy eating.   Each child has been given a gift bag to bring home, including a healthy eating wall chart. Please encourage your child to monitor the fruit and vegetables that they eat over the weekend by putting the appropriate stickers in the correct place.

In Forest School this week, Reception made some picture frames from things that they could find in the woods. The children decided they would try and make the frames square which meant we needed to find sticks that were the same length. Some of the frames turned into rectangles!

Year 1

Year 1 children also enjoyed the visit by Rainforest creatures.  In Art this week, we have been looking at leaf printing with our polystyrene images, proved very interesting and some green hands!

Next week, Year 1 are having a picnic lunch at Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds, followed by a guided tour with a Park Ranger. They will look at different types of trees and plants. On Friday, we will be having another excursion but this time it will be the turn of Years 1 and 2 to visit to Tesco, Newmarket, as part of their ‘Farm to Fork’ sustainability studies.

Please note that Year 1’s assembly will take place on Tuesday 28th June at 9.00 am with coffee and refreshments in the foyer from 8.40 am.

Year 2

Year 2 enjoyed performing their class assembly this week. It was called ‘The Queen and Mr Brown in The Mystery Of Easter Island’ and told the story of how Her Majesty and her favourite corgi came to Fairstead House. The Queen wanted to find out the answers to her questions about the deforestation and habitat destruction on Easter Island from her letter that she sent at the beginning of term. Year 2 wrote script themselves and relished acting out the story. Everyone delivered their self-written lines with aplomb!

Year 3

In Literacy, Year 3 are currently studying poetry. The children have read poems about cats, identified elements that appear in poetry and, having chosen a favourite, discussed why they liked it. Over the next couple of weeks they are going to collect favourite poems and write a couple of their own to build into an anthology and have made books to keep their collections in.

Year 5

In DT this week, Year 5 have worked hard to finish off their toys with cam mechanisms. Through imaginative designs, the children have developed their understanding of the cam mechanism and evaluated the success of their design throughout. The finished products look great!

As part of our geographical study of South America, the children also enjoyed researching a South American country of their choice. Each child has created their own unique piece of art work to demonstrate an important aspect of their country, which was then shared with the rest of the class.  Do come and admire them!

Year 6

Since Half Term, the connected curriculum has focused on a study of South America.  This display was created by the class, showing a range of learning outcomes.  Each pupil chose a country and explored the physical and human geography, climate, statistical information and the unique characteristics.  The learning has included various subjects and allowed the children to share their work in a variety of ways.

Ancient Greek

As the children learn about Classical Greek language and culture, they have been using The Olympics as a mini-topic. In this week’s activity, the class have ‘excavated’ vase fragments painted with an athlete and with Greek text written on it. They also found pieces of brick, Greek coins and stones. They have re-assembled the vase to read and translate the Greek text. The image is inspired by an exciting project animating vase paintings. I urge you to explore to see a variety of the delightful animations, and this week’s inspiration, The Cheat!
